Overview
The mission of the PhD program in Kinesiology at The University of Southern Mississippi is to train students to become research scientists and scholars in the broad field of Kinesiology. This integrative, mentor-guided degree program has four objectives:
- Train students in specific areas of expertise.
- Provide quantitative and qualitative research training in the student’s content area.
- Develop diverse, independent, and service-minded researchers.
- Engage in meaningful opportunities for application and dissemination of research.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the requirements detailed in Admission Requirements and Procedures, applicants must submit the following documents:
- Statement of Purpose - Applicants should pay particular attention to the instructions for writing the personal statement found in the online application.
- CV/Résumé
- Writing Sample - This sample should be an example of your best, original writing; it may be a published paper, or one submitted for a class assignment.
- Three Letters of Recommendation
Program Requirements and Academic Policies
In addition to the General Degree Requirements and General Academic Information:
- All graduate students must register for Kinesiology Seminar (KIN 780) for one credit hour each semester they are enrolled for six total credit hours.
- For research credits, students should register for appropriate research hours in KIN 791 until they have reached at minimum 15 credit hours.
Additional program requirements for graduation:
- Satisfactory development and presentation of an original Dissertation Research Prospectus in written and oral formats*
- Satisfactory completion of written and oral Comprehensive Exams*
- Satisfactory completion and defense of a Dissertation*
*Satisfactory completion of these additional requirements is determined and approved by the student’s advisory committee.
