School of Health Professions


Unit Description

The School of Health Professions was created as an organizational focus for expanded activities in community health and care. The school offers two (2) graduate degrees, a Masters of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) with three areas of focus that include epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion and health behavior, and health policy and administration. The Masters of Science in Athletic Training degree prepares graduates for professional-level employment in a variety of employment settings and to render care to a wide spectrum of individuals engaged in physical activity as a healthcare professional. The MSAT includes 66 hours of required coursework, including 5 semesters (18 credit hours) of clinical experience. A comprehensive exam, a research project, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in coursework is required for graduation. In the final semester of the MSAT students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer. The MSAT degree is accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The Master of Public Health degree seeks to prepare students for leadership responsibilities in public and private health settings that focus on improving quality of life through education, research, and community service. The MPH program includes 45 hours of required coursework, including 280 hours of fieldwork. The MPH program partners with the College of Business and Economic Development and the College of Arts and Sciences allowing students to complete an MPH and complementary degrees in Business and Anthropology simultaneously. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation. The MPH program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.
