The Health Coaching for Health Professionals minor is designed to provide students with essential skills and knowledge relevant to a career or interest in health and wellness coaching, specifically tailored for health professionals. A health coach serves as a supportive mentor, guiding others toward optimal well-being through personalized lifestyle changes. Through the required coursework, which includes principles of exercise and wellness, behavior change theory, exercise programming, and chronic disease management, students develop the capacity to assess clients’ unique health and wellness needs, emphasizing application within a context specific to healthcare professionals.
Building on this foundational learning, the Health Coaching for Health Professionals minor offers electives to cater to specific areas of interest for health professionals, such as nutrition, marketing, stress management, and ethics. These specialized courses provide students with opportunities to delve deeper into key health coaching concepts, enabling a more comprehensive exploration of the principles and practices associated with health and wellness coaching, particularly tailored to the needs of health professionals. Additionally, elective coursework contributes to the knowledge and skill base needed for students to pass the certification exam successfully.
The material taught in minor will prepare students to sit for the American Council on Exercise Health Coach Certification exam. This exam is the only Health Coach certification accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
The Health Coaching for Health Professionals minor requires 18 hours; no more than 9 hours can be applied to a minor from the student’s major DEG01 courses.
