Sports Medicine BS

The Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine degree program is designed to provide students with a firm foundation in the field of sports medicine in preparation for future graduate studies in fields such as athletic training, medicine, occupational therapy, physician assistant, and physical therapy. Students in this degree program will experience coursework in the foundations of health and healthcare, career planning, evidence-based practice, ethical practice, health communication, and human movement and performance.

In addition to the coursework described above, all students will receive coursework in Sports Medicine including: introduction to athletic training, emergency medical responder training, fundamentals of injury management for sports medicine professionals, and medical terminology. This will also result in a Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals certification inclusive of First Aid, CPR, and AED training.

Each student will select a related minor (biological sciences, chemistry, child advocacy studies, health and medical humanities, kinesiology, psychology, public health, recreational therapy, or sport management) to further their knowledge and prepare for graduate studies.

Admission Requirements:

Program Admission Standards:

  • A University of Southern Mississippi cumulative GPA of 2.50 is required for all students transferring into this degree plan.
  • Though a student may be admitted to the program based on a 2.50 cumulative GPA earned at a previous institution (i.e., junior college), once admitted the student must obtain and maintain a University of Southern Mississippi cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better to remain in good standing within the program.
  • First-year students may be admitted to the program – once admitted, the student must obtain and maintain a University of Southern Mississippi cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better to remain in good standing within the program.

Program Progression Standards:

  • A minimum University of Southern Mississippi cumulative GPA of 2.50 is required for all students (calculated on all USM and transfer coursework, excluding remedial coursework).
  • A minimum grade of B in each of the following courses: HP 211, HP 219, HP 350, HP 495.
  • A minimum grade of C must be earned in all remaining program curriculum required courses (DEG 01 and DEG 02).
  • Students whose cumulative University of Southern Mississippi GPA goes below 2.50 will be placed on program probation and will not be allowed to enroll in HP courses 300-level and above until the cumulative GPA is once again at 2.50 or above.
