The Uncrewed Maritime System (UMS) Operator Certificate curriculum will provide students with in-depth science and engineering knowledge in UMS operations, including how the physical environment factors into decisions and mission planning, and how to apply ocean engineering principles for preparing and operating unmanned vehicles in the field. Students will learn advanced concepts and draw knowledge from real-world case studies upon which to build more detailed training on specific platforms, including unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) including ocean gliders and powered vehicles as well as unmanned surface vehicles (USVs).
All Uncrewed Maritime Systems certificate courses must be taken at The University of Southern Mississippi.
The University of Southern Mississippi courses Basic Marine Instrumentation (MAR 431 – 3 hours), Marine Autonomous Vehicles (MAR 433 – 3 hours), Marine Autonomous Vehicles Lab (MAR 433L – 1 hour), Operating Instrumentation in Marine Environments (MAR 434 - 3 hours) will be a prerequisites to this program, waived on case-by-case request.
