Students are required to complete a minor or second major. Thus, the Applied Economics BS encourages students to follow one of several paths, though these are not explicitly part of the degree plan and the student needs to discuss various academic and career paths with their academic advisor. While all students with a BS in Applied Economics have two semesters of training with data analysis, some students may want to develop additional programming skills. For those students, a minor in Computer Science may be appropriate. Students interested in PhD program in economics upon graduate should consider a minor in Mathematics. For students more interested in public policy, public administration, or law school, we suggest a minor in one of the related Social Sciences such as Political Science, Sociology, Legal Studies, or Anthropology. For students who are interested in eventual managerial positions in the private sector, a minor in Business Administration is recommended. Many other minors are appropriate for various career paths as well, including minors in World Languages or Philosophy.

Additionally, students can satisfy this requirement with a second major. Recent students have had second majors in fields as diverse as Construction Management, Health Policy and Administration, and Political Science.
