The Bachelor of Science program in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Microbiology combines the study of microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and viruses), and immunology (functionality of the immune system). Students will learn how microorganisms positively and negatively influence health, society, and the environment, as well as investigate their role in biomedicine and biotechnology. Students will explore the areas of microbial ecology, microbial genetics, pathogenic microbiology, applied microbiology, immunology, virology, and biochemistry. There are numerous opportunities for individuals moving directly into the workforce with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Microbiology in the areas of agricultural, environmental, food, and industrial microbiology; public health; resource management; basic research; education; and sales. Alternatively, students may pursue an advanced degree or a career in healthcare like a physician, physician’s assistant, dentist, optometrist, or veterinarian. A Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Microbiology will position individuals well for admission into an advanced or professional degree program. Biological Sciences (Microbiology) majors work closely with a faculty advisor to tailor course selections to fit their specific career goals.
