DEG 01. Major Area of Study Requirements (58-60 hours)

Advanced Music Theory (4 hours)

Capstone (Select 1):

Major instrument (12 hours)

Must be taken studying the same instrument for 6 semesters (12 hours required). Summer excluded ♦

Major Area Ensemble (6 hours)

Must be taken for 6 semesters. Summers excluded.

Must be taken for 3 semesters as

Foreign Language Requirement (3-12 hours)

12 hours in a single foreign language; fewer hours may suffice, but course level 202 must be completed.

Select 3 hours from ENG or HIS or FL courses.

300-level courses recommeded, especially:

Hours to Degree


124 hours are needed to graduate with a BA in Music. Of the total hours applied to this degree, 30 hours must be in courses numbered at the 300 level or above. The student must earn at least 21 of the last 30 hours of course work and at least 12 hours in the major area of study from Southern Miss. See Residence Hour Requirements  for more information.
