The curricula in music education are designed to prepare musicians who will teach in public or private schools or teach privately. The emphasis area is designed to provide a balance between music performance, music pedagogy and general education. These curricula are fully certified by the National Association of Schools of Music, and satisfy teacher licensure requirements in the state of Mississippi.

Licensure: This program is designed to meet the licensure requirements of the State of Mississippi Department of Education. Students who plan to complete this program should consult the Teacher Education Program Requirements for program admission, progression, and teacher candidacy requirements.
Music Education Competency Exam: In order to progress to mid-level music teaching and clinic experience classes, students must successfully complete MED 298 - Music Education Competency Exam . This is an intermediate exam, generally taken after the fourth semester of study. Students are permitted a maximum of two attempts to successfully complete this course. Failure to pass the Music Education Competency Exam will necessitate a change of degree plan, per the recommendation of the music education faculty.
