Public History Graduate Certificate

Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Public History is designed for those interested in careers in public history, including museums, historic sites and parks, libraries, archives, historical societies, and other non-profit historical organizations. The Graduate Certificate in Public History program is an interdisciplinary program which gives students the ability to tailor their studies in public history to their specific interests and career needs. Graduate Certificate in Public History students have gone on to careers in museums and historical associations throughout the region.

Admission Requirements

For admission to the Graduate Certificate in Public History program, the school requires applicants have a bachelor’s degree with some background in History (usually a major of a minor), an undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and a statement of career and/or academic objectives in the field of Public History.

In addition to the Graduate School Admission Requirements and Procedures  for regular admission, students whose native language is not English must score at least 90 on the TOEFL iBT Examination. The school presumes that applicants who have fulfilled these requirements possess an adequate knowledge of English. If, upon their arrival at the university, it is determined that they do not possess an adequate command of English, the school reserves the right to require appropriate remedial courses.

Program Requirements and Academic Policies

All students are expected to successfully complete the following requirements:

• A total of fifteen (15) semester hours
• A comprehensive written examination
• A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation

Graduate students seeking a degree in history may be able to count up to six (6) hours of credit from this program towards their degree.

Students may also complete the Public History Graduate Certificatefully online. The required courses, HIS 605 and HIS 765, are offered as hybrid delivery, and students in the online program may take electives that are fully online.
