Major Instrument (16 hours minimum)


Must be taken studying the same wind/percussion/string instrument for 8 semesters. Summers excluded. ♦

Senior Recital (0-1 hour)


Select 1 course:

Major Ensemble (8 hours)


Must be taken for 8 semesters studying the same instrument. Summers excluded.

Chamber Music (2 hours)


Must be taken for 2 semesters.

Recital Class


Must be taken for 7 semesters.

DEG 02. Electives


Choose MED, MUP, or MUS electives as needed with advisor’s approval. (See Hours to Degree below).

♦Students must complete at least one semester of major instrument (applied lessons) at the 400-level.

Hours to Degree


125 hours are needed to graduate with a BMEd in Music Education with an emphasis in Instrumental Pedagogy. At least 50 percent of the hours applied to a degree at The University of Southern Mississippi must be earned from a senior college, and 30 of these hours must be in courses numbered 300 or above. The student must earn at least 21 of the last 30 hours of course work and at least 12 hours in the major area of study from Southern Miss. See Residence Hour Requirements  for more information.
