Legal Studies Minor

Students who are interested in law school may wish to minor in legal studies. The legal studies minor provides students with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of law. Students may tailor the minor for a greater focus on the law in a particular area of interest. However, the legal studies minor is not intended to prepare a student for a career as a paralegal and is not approved by the American Bar Association.

Requirements for a Minor

Students minoring in legal studies must complete 21 hours of course work. Required courses include:

PS 380 - Introduction to Law in American Society 3 hrs.
PLS 382 - Civil Litigation 3 hrs.
PLS 383 - Legal Research 3 hrs.

Remaining course work (12 hours)

The remaining 12 hours of course work may be chosen from the following, with at least one course in political science (PS):

CJ 330 - Criminal Law 3 hrs.
CJ 360 - Introduction to Juvenile Justice 3 hrs.
CJ 430 - Criminal Procedure 3 hrs.
CJ 431 - Environmental Law 3 hrs.
CJ 433 - Evidence, Search and Seizure 3 hrs.
CJ 471 - Victims of Crime 3 hrs.
BA 200 - The Legal Environment of Business 3 hrs.
BA 411 - Advanced Business Law 3 hrs.
EI 461 - Entertainment Law 3 hrs.
MCJ 460 - Media Law 3 hrs.
PLS 384 - Legal Drafting 3 hrs.
PLS 385 - Law Office Computing and Management 3 hrs.
PLS 386 - Equity Practice 3 hrs.
PLS 387 - Title Searching and Loan Document Preparation 3 hrs.
PLS 388 - Commercial Skills for Paralegals 3 hrs.
PS 404 - The Legislative Process 3 hrs.
PS 431 - International Law and Organization 3 hrs.
PS 480 - United States Constitutional Law 3 hrs.
PS 481 - The American Judicial Process 3 hrs.
PS 484 - Administrative Law 3 hrs.

Note:

Students majoring in political science and minoring in legal studies may not count PS courses toward both the major and the minor. Students majoring in paralegal studies are not eligible for a minor in legal studies.
