Physical Education K12 Teaching BS


The Physical Education K12 Teaching BS is designed to prepare candidates to teach standards-based physical education in K-12 schools. Upon completion of the program and the Mississippi Department of Education’s testing requirements, students are eligible to apply for a Mississippi Educator’s License in K-12 Physical Education.

Licensure: This program is designed to meet the licensure requirements of the State of Mississippi Department of Education. Students who plan to complete this program should consult the Teacher Education Program Requirements  for program admission, progression, and teacher candidacy requirements.

Accreditation: The physical education (K-12) licensure program is a member of the University Professional Education Unit, which is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and is nationally recognized by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America).

Physical Education K12 Teaching BS Program Progression Requirements:

In addition, students in Physical Education K12 Teaching BS will progress through the program in three distinct phases. Students are required to be in good academic standing to progress from one phase to the next. In each phase, student must adhere to the requirements for professional dispositions.

Phase I: Introductory Phase (60 hours)

All students who are eligible for admission to USM (see University Admissions Policies) are eligible to declare Physical Education K12 Teaching BS as their major and begin progressing through the Introductory Phase of the program.

The Introductory Phase includes:

  • Completion of the USM GEC 01-06 or its transfer equivalent
  • Earned minimum grade of C in English Composition I and English Composition II
  • Satisfaction of one of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) Candidate Admittance Requirements (see Teacher Education Program Requirements )
  • Completion of registration for the Pre-service Teacher License

Phase 2: Emerging Educator Phase

Upon successful completion of the Introductory Phase, students will have a Pre-Service Teaching License from MDE and be eligible to complete observation hours in K12 schools.

During the Emerging Educator Phase student will also continue to take additional coursework from their degree plan. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses in DEG 01 and DEG 02.

Phase 3: Professional Educator Phase (27 hours)

Students are eligible to enter the Professional Educator Phase when they have obtained a Pre-Service Teaching License and are within one to two semester until enrollment in student teaching.

Students will enroll in required Professional Education Coursework (CIS 303 , CIS 354 , KIN 462 , KIN 463 , and SPE 400 ).

Student must earn a minimum grade of C in each of these courses. During the students final semester of coursework, registration for student teaching should submitted. Upon successful completion of all other degree requirements, students will be able to enroll in student teaching (KIN 490  and KIN 491 ).
