General Education Curriculum (30 hours)

All majors contain the same General Education Curriculum Requirements . Programs may require specific GEC courses, indicated in the Degree Plan (DEG 01, etc.).

DEG 01. Major Area of Study Requirements (33-36 hours)

For this major, a minimum grade of “C” is required in HIS 300 and HIS 400.

HIS 101 - World Civilizations: Beginnings to 1500 C.E. 3 hrs. *
HIS 102 - World Civilizations: 1500 to the present 3 hrs. *
HIS 201 - Survey of United States History to 1877 3 hrs.
HIS 202 - Survey of United States History since 1877 3 hrs.
HIS 300 - Research Seminar 3 hrs. (WI)
HIS 400 - Senior History Seminar 3 hrs. (Capstone)
Select 18 hours of 300/400-level HIS courses or HUM 402 . **

DEG 02. Additional Requirements (15-18 hours)

Select 12 hours in a single world language. Fewer hours may suffice, but course level 202 must be completed.

* This course satisfies both the GEC requirement and a program requirement for this major.

** Of the 18 remaining hours required for the major, no more than 12 hours of upper-division coursework can be selected from any one of the three following course areas: (1) United States history, (2) European history or (3) other (Latin American, Asia, Africa and other non-United States, non-European courses).

Hours to Degree

124 hours are needed to graduate with a BA in History. Of the total hours applied to this degree, 30 hours must be in courses numbered at the 300 level or above. The student must earn at least 21 of the last 30 hours of course work and at least 12 hours in the major area of study from Southern Miss. See Residence Hour Requirements for more information.
