Physics MS

Overview

The Physics, MS program includes core courses in Electromagnetism, Classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics. In addition, the master’s program also involves conducting research culminating in a project or thesis.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the Admission Requirements and Procedures , applicants must submit:

• CV/Resume
• Statement of Purpose (highlighting reasons for applying to the program and specific research interest, if any)
• Three Letters of Recommendation
• Transcripts of previous Academic Record

Program Requirements and Academic Policies

In addition to meeting the requirements stated in General Degree Requirements  and General Academic Information , students must:

• Satisfactorily complete a master’s comprehensive examination.
• Satisfactorily complete a thesis or project:

        ♦ Develop and complete an original research project, thesis, and oral defense
        ♦ Complete a project under the direction of a faculty member

Course Requirements (30 hours)

• PHY 601 - Mechanics 3 hrs.
• PHY 602 - Electricity and Magnetism 3 hrs.
• PHY 603 - Statistical Physics 3 hrs.
• PHY 650 - Quantum Mechanics I 3 hrs.
• PHY 689 - Seminar I 1 hr. (A total of 2 hrs.)
• PHY 698 - Thesis 1-6 hrs. for a total of 6 hours. (Students in thesis option must take a total of 6 hours)
• PHY 691 - Research in Physics 1-16 hrs. (Students in project option must take a total of 3 hours)
• PHY Electives as needed to complete 30 hours total
