The Functional Fluency Badge is available for French, Spanish, or German and requires 6 hours of 300-level credit in French, Spanish, or German and a score of 5 or higher on the STAMPS 4S Test, or documentation of a level of B1 or Intermediate Mid with another nationally recognized test. Students can take this badge in more than one language.
Skillsets
Outcome 1: Functional fluency in a second language
Students will be able to handle basic communicative tasks in straightforward social situations. They can ask and answer questions with some detail about themselves and their immediate environment (travel, lodging, food, shopping).
Their language is characterized by strings of sentences that use high-frequency and simpler grammatical structures.
Outcome 2: Knowledge and Understanding of World Cultures
Students will be able to:
- recognize the cultural diversity throughout the areas of the world where the language they are studying is spoken,
- be able to compare the cultural diversity of the areas of the world where the language they are studying is spoken to that of their own culture,
- be able to compare and contrast cultural practices and perspectives as they relate to diverse world cultures and their own native cultures, and
- be able to identify and discuss the importance of appreciating and respecting cultural differences.
Outcome 3: Critical thinking and collaboration in a second language
Students will:
- demonstrate critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving abilities through advanced task-based language activities (i.e., creative skits, videos, websites, curriculum vitae, summaries, research papers, internship reports, student-led classes, oral presentations, etc.)
