The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program offers foundational courses for entry level careers in a variety of healthcare settings as well as nursing. The Health Science program includes courses in the liberal arts and humanities, the sciences, and two minor areas of study which prepare the student to function as an engaged citizen and to effectively practice in careers that provide support in health-related fields. The growing healthcare industry includes an array of jobs, and this degree provides students with foundational knowledge for employment in that sector.
Students who plan to apply to the baccalaureate nursing program must list another major until they are admitted to the nursing program. Students are encouraged to begin their degree path in health science. The first two years of the health sciences degree plan will enable students to complete prerequisites required to apply to nursing or to continue and earn a degree in health sciences.
Most courses in the health sciences degree plan are face-to-face in Hattiesburg and are required to complete the degree. There are, however, some face-to-face Gulf Coast and online course options that may be available. Both full-time and part-time plans of study are available. Students selecting courses with NSG (Nursing) prefixes must be classified as juniors to enroll in NSG 400-level courses. Nursing courses taken for a health science degree does not transfer for credit purposes to any of the SPNP nursing programs.
