Nonprofit Studies Graduate Certificate


Overview


The Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Studies is an interdisciplinary program which provides students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for work in the non-profit sector. This certificate program is appropriate for current Southern Miss graduate students who wish to pursue career in the nonprofit sector as well as individuals with a baccalaureate degree who are currently employed in or wish to transition to the nonprofit sector and need additional or specialized training.

Program Requirements and Academic Policies


The Nonprofit Studies certificate requires completion of five (5) classes or fifteen (15) semester hours. Students must earn a 3.0 GPA for graduation.

Electives:


In addition to the three (3) required nonprofit courses, all students must complete two (2) electives or six (6) semester hours. Students cannot use courses that are part of a completed certificate or degree program if the student has already had the certificate or degree conferred. Transfer electives from other institutions may not be applied to this certificate.

There are three paths to completing the certificate depending on a student’s current and prior coursework. Students who have taken no graduate level business courses should follow Path A. Students who are currently working on but have not yet completed their MBA should follow Path B. Students who have completed the Business Foundations Graduate Certificate or the Master of Business Administration should follow Path C

Path A: Students who have taken no graduate level business courses should choose two of the following courses as their electives:

  • BA 600 - Management Foundations
  • BA 611 - Accounting Foundations
  • BA 650 - Marketing Foundations
  • BA 670 - Finance Foundations

Path B: Students who are currently working on but have not yet completed the MBA program will use two of the following classes as the electives for the Nonprofit Studies certificate:

  • ACC 611 - Managerial Accounting
  • FIN 611 - Financial Management
  • MGT 600 - Organizational Behavior and Leadership
  • MKT 600 - Marketing Management

Path C: Students who have previously completed the Business Foundations Graduate Certificate or the Master of Business Administration (MBA) should take 6 hours of course work in a single discipline as approved by the certificate director. This discipline should be related to the nonprofit sector in which the student is interested in working:

  • social services
  • human rights and advocacy
  • the arts, culture, and history
  • education and educational support
  • the environment and animal welfare
  • health care, education, and research
  • international affairs and foreign affairs
