Southern Miss Gulf Scholars Certificate


The Southern Miss Gulf Scholars Certificate provides students with placed-based, experiential learning opportunities that focus on sustainability principles and knowledge of the Gulf region. Participants will have opportunities to address the perennial and novel challenges of living and working on the Gulf of Mexico through interdisciplinary and civic-minded thinking and experiential learning. At the end of the program, participants will have completed a service-learning and/or research project aimed at creating a more just, equitable, and resilient Gulf of Mexico.

 

Availability: Gulf Park campus

Admission Requirements:

Admission to the program requires an undergraduate to have at least two (2) semesters remaining with the university and be in good academic standing. In addition to the requirements detailed in the admission requirements, applicants must submit the following materials:

Academic Policies and Requirements for Certificates:

The Southern Miss Gulf Scholars Certificate requires a minimum of twelve (12) hours of undergraduate course work. Courses available to GSP participants have gone through a development and approval process to include place-based, experiential learning modules. The four-course certificate requires SUS 330, two courses taken within the student’s major (courses approved by GSP advisor), and another GSP advisor approved course. Once admitted to the program, Southern Miss Gulf Scholars will meet with a Gulf Scholars advisor to plan their courses.

Co-Curricular Requirements:


Participants will complete a Gulf Impact Project in one of their four courses for the certificate. They will also present that project to stakeholders at the Gulf Symposium.

 

In the co-curricular path, students are required to take or participate in:

  • SUS 330 and other courses once qualified
  • 60+ hours Community Service, Internship, or IMPACT Community Work-Study Program
  • A 3-hour course or undergraduate research facilitating the Gulf Impact Project
  • The Alternative Service Break

Gulf Impact Project Presentation: students will participate in the Gulf Impact Project during their senior year. The project will build their knowledge about systems-thinking, equity, and sustainability by completing and presenting their project.
