Program Curriculum


DEG 01. Major Area of Study Requirements (30-34 hours)


Required of all Sustainability Studies majors (9 hours):


9 Hours of Required Coursework: 3 in Foundation in Society and Sustainability, 3 in Communication, Society, and the Environment, and 3 in a Project-based Capstone.

Project-based Capstone (3 hours):

+Track #1: Environmental Humanities (21 additional elective hours): 15 hours Humanities electives, 3 hours Natural Sciences electives, and 3 hours Social Sciences electives

+Track #2: Science, Technology, and the Environment (21 additional elective hours): 15 hours Natural Sciences electives, 3 hours Humanities electives, and 3 hours Social Sciences electives

+Track #3: Sustainable Policy and Development (21 additional elective hours): 15 hours Social Sciences electives, 3 hours Natural Sciences electives, and 3 hours Humanities electives

#Track #4: General Sustainability Studies (21 additional elective hours): 21 hours in any of the elective courses listed below under Humanities, Natural Sciences, and/or Social Sciences.

+These tracks will be used internally for advisement and will not appear on the DPR or degree plan.

Hours to Degree


120 hours are needed to graduate with a BA in Sustainability Studies. At least 50 percent of the hours applied to a degree at The University of Southern Mississippi must be earned from a senior college, and 30 of these hours must be in courses numbered 300 or above. The student must earn at least 21 of the last 30 hours of course work and at least 12 hours in the major area of study from Southern Miss. See Residence Hour Requirements for more information.
