The Social Work curriculum is delivered in a block format. Each of these course blocks is designed to build upon each other from semester to semester. Therefore, students must meet the progression criteria below to be eligible to enroll in the next block. Details of the block schedule can be found in the Social Work BSW Semester Guide .

To be eligible to advance in the social work program and remain in good standing, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Prior to enrolling in the Intro block classes, students must complete a minimum of 41 credit hours applicable to the degree. See below for block schedule. 
  2. Earn a minimum grade of C in all required courses (all DEG courses).
  3. Maintain a minimum cumulative USM GPA of 2.50 (excluding remedial courses, if applicable).
  4. Be a declared SWK major.
  5. Adhere to the standards of conduct specified in the Social Work Code of Ethics and the Professional and Technical Standards document.
  6. Adhere to the advisement plan and course sequencing requirements prescribed by the School of Social Work.
  7. Satisfactorily complete all other degree (and minor if applicable) requirements prior to enrolling in senior Capstone and field practicum.
  • Social Work students may repeat no more than two SWK courses, one time each.
  • Students who fail to meet program progression standards will be placed on program probation for one semester and may not be eligible to enroll in subsequent SWK courses. Students who fail to meet program standards while on probation may be dismissed from the School of Social Work.

Licensure: This program is designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. Students who intend to seek licensure in another state should verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements.
