Requirements for a Minor

The Department of History also offers a minor combining history and music history. It is ideally suited for music and music education majors and for anyone interested in exploring the relationship between history and the arts. For more information on this minor, contact the chair of the Department of History or the director of the School of Music.

Students minoring in history and music history must complete 24 hours in the following courses:

MUS 307 - History of Music I 3 hrs.
MUS 308 - History of Music II 3 hrs.
HIS 201 - Survey of United States History to 1877 3 hrs. or
HIS 202 - Survey of United States History since 1877 3 hrs.
HIS 401 - Themes in the Non-Western World 3 hrs.
HIS 413 - The United States and Latin America 3 hrs.
HIS 424 - The World in the 20th Century 3 hrs.

MUS 360 - Stylistic Developments in Jazz 3 hrs.
MUS 431 - History of Opera 3 hrs.
MUS 432 - Music in the U.S. 3 hrs.

MUS 434 - Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Music 3 hrs.
MUS 435 - Baroque Music 3 hrs.
MUS 436 - 18th-Century Music 3 hrs.
MUS 437 - 19th-Century Music 3 hrs.
MUS 450 - Symphonic Literature 3 hrs.
MUS 471 - Seminar in Masterpieces of Music 3 hrs.

Note:

In lieu of MUS 307 , MUS 308 , students may take courses in opera, American music, symphonic literature, Baroque, classic, romantic, 20th century, jazz history, or masterpieces of music.
