The Assistant to the Dean for Finance and Administration manages graduate assistant stipend and tuition waiver budgets and serves as a liaison with colleges regarding graduate assistant allocations, assignment forms, and offer letters.

The McNair Scholars Program at USM fosters the success of first generation/low income students and students underrepresented in graduate school. The purpose of the program is to provide instruction, professional development, and research opportunities that allow students in these demographic groups to transition seamlessly from undergraduate to graduate programs with the goal of earning a Ph.D.

Graduate Council

Graduate Council recommends programs and policies pertaining to graduate education at USM. It includes elected faculty members from the degree-granting colleges. Permanent ex officio members are the UniversityPresident, the Dean of Libraries, and the Dean of the Graduate School. The council elects a chair from its regular members. The University Registrar serves as recording secretary of the council. The council’s meeting dates, members and bylaws are available at www.usm.edu/graduate-school/faculty-staff.php.

The responsibilities of the Graduate Council include: 

  • Review and approval of graduate faculty.
  • Review and approval of course and curriculum changes.
  • Review and approval of new graduate programs submitted through college curriculum committees.
  • Development of policies relevant to graduate education.

The Graduate Student Senate consists of representative voting members from each school. The Graduate Student Senate advises the Dean of the Graduate School on issues affecting graduate students. See www.usm.edu/graduate-school/graduate-student-senate

The responsibilities of GSS include:

  • Representing graduate students on Graduate Council.
  • Assisting with the organization of the annual research symposium.
  • Assisting the Graduate School with special projects benefiting graduate students.
  • Participating in community service activities.
