Candidates are encouraged to take courses 10-12 during the semesters in which they are enrolled inclinical experiences.

DEG 02. Co-requisite Clinical Experience (24 hours)


Candidates must be admitted to the Professional Education Program prior to enrolling in clinical experiences (Gold Card). Certain courses are restricted.

See page 245 for details.

Teacher candidates seeking licensure must complete a minimum of 2 semesters of clinical experiences prior to teacher candidacy.

Prerequistes for all DEG02 courses: SPE 121 , SPE 400 , SPE 402 , and SPE 430 .

DEG 03. Electives (12 hours)


Choose electives as needed with advisor’s approval. It is highly recommended that candidates select electives that will lead towards subject-area supplemental endorsements. The total number of elective hours for awarding the degree is 12.

All courses must be completed before student teaching.

Hours to Degree


122 hours are needed to graduate with a BS in Special Education (K-12 Licensure). At least 50 percent of the hours applied to a degree at The University of Southern Mississippi must be earned from a senior college, and 45 of these hours must be in courses numbered 300 or above. The last 25 percent of course work must be earned from Southern Miss. The student must earn at least 12 hours in the major area of study from Southern Miss.
