Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: The Graduate School

To enhance recruitment of strong undergraduate majors for graduate studies, the accelerated master’s option (AMO) would allow undergraduate students majoring in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science classified as seniors with a 3.5 GPA to earn up to 9 hours of graduate credit toward a master’s degree in Criminal Justice.

Admission Criteria

Senior undergraduate students in (identify major) who have a GPA of 3.5 or higher many take up to 9 credit hours of graduate credit in certain cross-listed elective courses during their senior year (elective courses not required in DEG 01 including, but not limited to: CJ 526, 540, 542, 550, 560, 561, 580, 563, 564, 570, 571, 572).

  1. Students must apply for admission to the AMO program during their junior year.
  2. Students must submit an application form that includes academic and career goals and the graduate courses they would like to take along with a resume and a copy of their transcript.
  3. Completion of a minimum of 90 hours of graded undergraduate coursework before beginning the first graduate course.
  4. Minimum and maintenance of a 3.5 undergraduate grade point average.
  5. Completion of at least 15 hours of appropriate undergraduate coursework offered by The School Criminal Justice, Forensic Science or Security.
  6. Submission of Undergraduate Request to Enroll in Graduate Courses form.

Additional Information

  1. AMO students are charged the undergraduate tuition rate.
  2. AMO students retain eligibility for financial aid at the undergraduate level provided they maintain full-time student classification.
  3. AMO students are limited to 15 hours of combined undergraduate/graduate coursework during a semester.
  4. Students may opt out of an AMO at any time and complete the required undergraduate degree plan. Any graduate credit earned to that point can be applied to the undergraduate degree plan.
  5. AMO students retain an undergraduate classification until they have completed all the requirements of their undergraduate degree plan. It is expected that a student will complete the undergraduate degree within two years of being accepted into an Accelerated Master’s Option.
  6. The graduate degree cannot be awarded until an AMO student meets all requirements for the undergraduate degree.
  7. A graduate course successfully completed (grade of B or above) to fulfill undergraduate degree requirements will be graded as Pass, which will not affect the student’s undergraduate grade point average. The letter grade for the course will be included in the master’s program GPA, if the student is accepted.
  8. Completion of the AMO does not automatically result in admission to the graduate program. Students completing the AMO are required to complete the same graduate application process as traditional graduate program applicants - an application fee will be required upon completion of the undergraduate degree and prior to enrollment as a graduate, degree-seeking student.
