Counseling Psychology MS

Overview


The Master of Science in Counseling Psychology is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) and maintains a mission to provide the knowledge, dispositions, and skills necessary for students to become competent professional counselors and/or seek further graduate study. The program provides training in the foundations required of proficient consumers of psychological science. As such, we train students to utilize the science of psychology to inform sound diagnostic and evidence-based interventions consistent with the philosophical underpinnings of Counseling Psychology in serving their clients, community, and the profession. Students completing the M.S. degree in Counseling Psychology will be eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Mississippi. 

Professional Licensure Disclosure: Programs at The University of Southern Mississippi are designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi cannot determine whether any program leads to licensure in any state other than Mississippi. It is recommended that students who intend to seek licensure in another state verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements. Admission Requirements


In addition to the requirements detailed in Admission Requirements and Procedures , applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. Official GRE scores
  2. Statement of Purpose - Applicants should pay particular attention to the instructions for writing the personal statement found in the online application. 
  3. CV/Résumé
  4. Three Letters of Recommendation

New students are admitted each fall semester. Applications received by March 1 each year will receive a full review for the following fall cohort. A student may be invited to come to campus for a personal interview as part of the application process.

Program Requirements and Academic Policies


In addition to the requirements detailed in General Degree Requirements  and General Academic Information , students must pass a criminal background check and maintain professional liability insurance for each semester enrolled in practicum/externship/internship.
