The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers undergraduate curricula that provide both a broad, eclectic exposure to communication processes and disorders as well as a solid foundation for graduate studies in the field. The department provides a blend of academics, clinical practica and research activities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
Educational and Clinical Services
In addition to its academic programs, a number of clinical and public service programs are affiliated with the department: (1) The Speech-Language-Audiology Clinic provides students with an orientation to clinical procedures used in speech-language pathology and audiology. The clinic provides assessment services and intervention programs to students, faculty, and the community. (2) The Children’s Center for Communication and Development provides an interdisciplinary approach to assessment and treatment of communicatively disabled and developmentally delayed infants and preschool children. (3) The DuBard School for Language Disorders provides speech-language and educational services for elementary-level students with severe disorders of language.
Requirements for a Major in Education of the Deaf (Licensure)
Specific course requirements for an undergraduate degree in education of the deaf are shown on the degree plan. Students must adhere to all teacher education requirements while maintaining an overall GPA of 2.75 on 44 hours of teacher education core courses, an approved sequence of professional course work, the successful completion of student teaching and obtaining passing scores on the Praxis II examination in two areas: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Exam and the Hearing Disability Exam. Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all education of the deaf courses and in all required professional education courses. Requirements for a Major in Speech Pathology and Audiology
The specific course requirements (shown on the degree plan) are designed to provide a pre-professional foundation for continued course work at the graduate level. Since professional certification and licensure require a graduate degree, students should plan to apply for graduate study at The University of Southern Mississippi (or at another accredited graduate program) following the completion of their undergraduate coursework.
Degree Progression Standards
Students must maintain a degree plan (DEG 01 only) GPA of 2.75 and earn a “C” or higher in all SHS prefixed courses. Students who fail to maintain the requisite 2.75 GPA or minimum letter grade requirements for all DEG 01 classes will be placed on program probation for one semester. If GPA or minimum letter grade requirements are not met while on program probation, the student will be dismissed from the program. Only one semester of program probation is allowed in a student’s academic career.
