The mission of the School of Psychology is to engage in the discovery and creation of knowledge associated with psychological and biological processes and their relationship to human behavior and to disseminate that knowledge through scholarship and teaching.
The School of Psychology offers graduate training in one of five degree granting programs. The Counseling Psychology MS is a two-year, full-time program designed to prepare graduates for practice as Licensed Professional Counselors, or for continued graduate study. The Ph.D. in Psychology includes four emphasis areas: Brain & Behavior, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology. Students admitted to these doctoral emphasis areas earn a MA degree en route to completion of their doctoral coursework, including completion of a thesis and dissertation. Programs are designed to be full-time, with coursework completed on the Hattiesburg campus.
The Counseling Psychology MS program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC). The Clinical, Counseling, and School PhD emphases are all accredited by the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation. In addition, the School emphasis is accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and includes a course sequence verified by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB), enabling students to complete the coursework required for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential. These applied areas provide training based on the scientist-practitioner training model integrating research and practice throughout the curriculum and preparing graduates for careers in academia, research, and practice roles in health service, government, educational, and research settings. The Brain and Behavior emphasis area is research focused and prepares graduates for teaching and/or research roles in academic institutions, research settings, and in business.
