The School of Polymer Science and Engineering offers undergraduate programs of study leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in polymer science and polymer science and engineering. The mission of the School of Polymer Science and Engineering is to develop the next generation of polymer scientists and engineers with the technical and professional skills to address the grand challenges of the 21st century.  The school will be at the forefront of polymer science and engineering research, with high impact publications and patents, external funding, corporate partnerships, recognition by the profession, and high performance of our graduates.

Enrollment in any polymer science class requires that the student has achieved a grade of C or higher in the designated prerequisite course(s). No polymer science course in which a student receives a grade less than C will count toward the polymer science major.

BS in Polymer Science

The Bachelor of Science degree program in polymer science at The University of Southern Mississippi is an interdisciplinary program of study with emphasis on research.  The student is introduced to the fundamentals and practical operating principles of polymer science focusing on approaches to solving relevant problems in the field.  Undergraduates in our program can expect to participate in pioneering research on a variety of topics under the supervision of our faculty.

Students pursuing the BS in polymer science must complete the University’s general education curriculum as well as 79-90 hours of coursework in the major. Calculus is required for this degree. For more information on specific details of degree requirements, please see the degree plan.

BS in Polymer Science and Engineering

The mission of the Bachelor of Science degree program in polymer science and engineering is to provide students with necessary preparation to excel in industry as highly competent polymer engineers or to pursue advanced degrees.  The vision of the polymer science and engineering program is to be recognized as a regional, national, and international leader in the development of polymer scientists and engineers by industry and academia.

The school’s undergraduate polymer science and engineering program prepares students to achieve the following educational objectives:

  • Advance professionally with increasing leadership and responsibility beyond entry level in polymer industries or related fields;
  • Build capability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team settings to achieve organization objectives;
  • Contribute to societal benefits in an environmentally and ethically responsible manner; and
  • Engage in life-long learning through professional activities and training, the pursuit of advanced degrees, and individual professional development.

Students pursuing the BS in polymer science and engineering must complete the University’s general education curriculum as well as 87-98 hours of coursework in the major. Calculus is required for this degree. This degree requires completion of 128 hours to graduate. For more information on specific details of degree requirements, please see the degree plan.
